Under Investigation: Trump Hotels Data Breaches

Why is Leonard Law Office in Boston looking into Trump Hotels data breaches?

A leading data security expert named Brian Krebs has revealed that there have been three separate data breaches at Trump-branded properties in the past two years.  This office is collecting stories from customers of Trump properties from July 2015 to July 2017.

Mr. Krebs wrote:

“…I thought it might be useful to see these events plotted on a timeline, because it suggests that virtually anyone who used a credit card at a Trump property in the past two years likely has had their card data stolen and put on sale in the cybercrime underground as a result.” (Krebs post here)

Why do data breaches matter?

Data breaches are obviously very troubling incidents.  Businesses have certain duties to safeguard customers’ private information. Careless network security practices make businesses vulnerable to data breaches, and businesses have a legal duty to exercise great care when they collect customer information and process credit card transactions. Consumers suffer when their personal data is stolen because of careless information security practices.  Data breaches can be deeply unsettling to their victims, and can cause long term financial damage. When thousands of passwords and usernames are stolen, and posted on the Internet, or sold on dark corners of the web, people are undoubtedly hurt. Credit card information that is taken can be used to make clone cards that can then be used to pull money directly from victims’ accounts. Identity theft is a common consequence for data breach victims.

Why don’t businesses do more to prevent data breaches?

Just as banks have a duty to invest in vaults with impenetrable walls and thick steel doors, almost any business operating in the Internet age must have robust defenses against data thieves. Solid digital defense are expensive to design and implement. Businesses focused on cutting costs to improve their profits do not make it a priority to invest in proper network security. Businesses with sloppy network security do not live up to the legal duty of care required of them. Negligent network / information security practices can result in great harm to consumers.

Will the Trump Hotels Data Breach Class Action be about Donald Trump‘s Presidency?

No. The focus of this (potential) case will be about whether Trump International Hotels Management LLC has used adequate data security practices to safeguard its customers’ Personal Identification Information (i.e. first and last names, home addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, ZIP codes) and Financial Information (i.e. credit card/debit card information, card numbers, PIN numbers, expiration dates).

What’s in it for you and why would you want to get involved?

A good class representative understands that they are performing a public service. A class representative’s primary motive should not be personal financial gain. Wanting to harm the defendant of a class action is not the correct mindset either – – especially here. This investigation and potential case is about two issues: 1) data security (or lack thereof); 2) consumer protection law. Please do not make contact with this office if you want to hurt the current President, or do anything illegal.

Good on ya mate. Trump invited Russia to hack his opponent Hillary Clinton and then his hotel businesses get hacked. Ironic! Karma’s a bitch in the real world and in cyber! You Yanks should be begging us to take you back. How’s democracy working out for ya now? Long Live The Queen!!

    • Not sure how to respond to this. You raise some interesting points. Thanks for taking the time to leave an interesting comment about the trump hotel data breach.

Glad to see that law firms are protecting the consumer rights when the government is failing to do the right thing. Data breaches and identity thefts ruin lives and the citizen with limited resources ends up buried with bureaucracy.

    • Adam, much appreciated. Some people are quick to criticize lawyers, so it is refreshing to receive a positive comment. It is true that data breaches can have serious negative consequences. It will be interesting to see what happens as a result of the Trump Hotel data breaches. 👁

I’m so glad that lawyers are holding people accountable for data breaches, even and especially when it’s our president, (not my president). Some people knock class action attorneys but honestly, you are helping rid us of evil corporations and protecting our rights so thank you! You are worth every penny you earn. I had a friend who had her identity stolen and it took her forever to recover, she spent so much time waiting to get her cards back and emotionally the toll was greater. Thank you for protecting us from further idenity theft and hopefully deterring people from being lax on their security and getting hacked by holding them accountable when this happens! Thank you!

    • Ridding America of evil corporations is not possible, but a data breach class action can help encourage a corporation to take cyber security more seriously. Thanks for taking the time to comment about the Trump Data Breach issue.

Mr. Jummie Larson, I don’t know what personal issues you may be struggling with, but please – calm down. Members of a society can differ in their political beliefs, but there is no need to be disrespectful. Mr. Leonard is simply doing his part as a responsible citizen by investigating into an issue to ensure there is no illlegal activitity being commuted by our commander and cheif. A word of advice, when people act overly defensive, yet back up their opinios with comments thet are solely meanspiritred, and the best you can do to bsck up your claim is cite that trumps passion for golf makes him “cool”? Maybe do some research before embarsssing yourself by spewing misguided and misplaced anger directed. By a complete stranger. Read one newspapers. Any newspaper. Just one. You maybe be shocked by how little you have informed yourself sbout the dangers of this preeidende.

    • Thanks for the comment. I want to clarify that Leonard Law Office is just looking into the Trump Hotels Data Breaches. Some other very important distinctions should be made too. First, the investigation into alleged “illegal activity” by Donald Trump is the current responsibility of Robert S. Mueller, Esq. He was the 6th Director of the FBI. The FBI is an institution that has the motto Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity. Class action lawyers are generally a different lot entirely. Also, in contrast to class action lawyers, FBI agents are trained to investigate federal crimes and answer to a chain of command.
